Count the words in your writing

Type or paste your writing to see how many words and characters it has. Handy when a form says "no more than 500 words".

This page doesn't keep your writing. If you close it, the words are gone, so copy them somewhere safe first.

1

Put your writing in the box

Type straight in, or copy it from somewhere else and paste it here (right-click and choose Paste, or press Ctrl + V).

What's really happening? (for the curious)

A word is counted as anything with a gap either side of it. So "Tenby" is one word, "Llanfair-pwll" is one word, and "£25" counts as one word too. Most word processors, like Microsoft Word, count in much the same way. Different programs can still disagree by a word or two, so leave a little room if your limit is strict.

A character is any single letter, number, space or punctuation mark. Some forms count characters instead of words (often written as "max 1,000 characters"). Check whether they mean with or without spaces. Both numbers are shown above.

The reading time assumes about 200 words a minute, which is a comfortable reading speed for most people.

All of this happens inside your web browser (the program you're using to view this page, such as Chrome, Edge or Safari). Your writing is never sent anywhere, and nothing is saved once you close the page.
